JUBILEE TOUR ACROSS THE MAR DE AROUSA AND THE ULLA RIVER

DEPARTURE:

The Traslatio Tour starts both at the Pedras Negras Marine in San Vicente do Mar and at the marine in Ribeira, which are located at the entrance to the estuary of the Ría de Arousa.

ARRIVAL:

The Jubilee Tour across the Mar de Arousa ends at the inland port of the Ulla River, in Padrón, where people recite: “Hic fuit corpus Beati Jacobi” (Here lay the body of St. James).

CONTINUE THE WAY TO SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA:

Those “nautical” pilgrims who wish to do so, will be able to continue their route to Santiago de Compostela and, once there, they will obtain an additional stamp from the Way of St. James.

"Jubilee Traslatio" Diploma

As in the any of the rest of pilgrim ways to Santiago de Compostela, “nautical” pilgrims will own a credential that they should get stamped at different places as a proof or their Jubilee Traslatio journey to Santiago. Credentials will be stamped at each docking harbour.

The Jubilee Traslatio is a diploma that proves the Traslatio or Fluvial-Maritime Jubilee Tour has been completed. The Mar de Arousa and Ulla Jubilee Tour Foundation and Padrón City Council issue the diploma to all crew staff and boats that meet the seal requirement of the Traslatio Navigation Credential issued by the Nautical Club San Vicente do Mar.

Stamps

The sea traveller should obtain two stamps in two intermediate inland ports from the city councils located between San Vicente do Mar and Padrón, where they should stay at least an hour and seal the credential.

One stamp should be obtained at a harbour located in the Northen shore of the estuary or the Ulla River (Province of A Coruña) and, the second one, should be obtained at a harbour located in the Southen shore of the estuary or the Ulla River (Province of Pontevedra). Furthermore, stamps can be obtained at the inland city councils that belong to Mar de Arousa and Ulla Jubilee Tour Foundation.

SIGHTSEEING TOURS OF SOME COASTAL VILLAGES: NATURE, ART, ARQUITECTURE AND GALICIAN CUISINE

The Traslatio Tour is complemented by an inland route to visit “Jubilee sites” at the different harbours and city councils that take part in this initiative.

Given that there is no time limit to conclude the tour, you can enjoy the amazing nature, the art, the architecture and dine the best seafood in the world. You can visit bodegas and savour famous Galician wines and go for a walk across Cortegada and its laurel tree wood, the biggest one in Europe. Moreover, you can enjoy traditional Spanish cuisine and nourish your mind, body and soul with our rich history, our beautiful landscapes and our fantastic cuisine.

The coast of the Ría de Arousa has lovely landscapes, rich in cultural heritage. On both shores you can find beaches, small bays, capes and coves and, as well as lovely small fishing and industrial towns and places dedicated to wine production and stockbreeding.

DIFFERENT ROUTES

This Jubilee Tour across the Ría de Arousa offers different routes. Departing from the South, you can go sightseeing in the small village of Sanxenxo, which has important monuments from the Roman Era and the Middle Ages. Then, you can travel to A Lanzada beach and continue to the West, where you will be able to visit Ons Island and Onza Island.

The O Grove peninsula and the A Toxa Island are two tourist attractions in the area that are worth seeing if you go on the Traslatio Tour.

WESTERN SIDE

On the western side of the O Barbanza peninsula there’s a small village called Ribeira, filled with megalithic remains (Dolmen de Axeitos) and celtic fortified settlements (castros).

The small village of A Pobra do Caramiñal has, as well, an important historic and cultural heritage with churches and manor houses like Xunqueiras Tower (15th century), Bermúdez Tower (16th century), Aguiar and Coton Manor Houses (18th century), and the churches of Santa María a Antiga do Caramiñal (16th century) and Santiago da Pobra de Deán (Gothic church from the 15th century).

EASTERN SIDE

On the eastern side of the O Barbanza península there’s a small village called Meaño, where we can visit the church of Santa María de Simes. If we travel towards the northern side, we arrive in Cambados, a town with an important artistic heritage. The small village stands out for Fefiñáns Square from the 17th century, the Church of San Bieito de Fefiñáns, Ramón Cabanillas’ House Museum, some manor houses from the 17th and the 18th century and, other important churches like Santa Mariña Dozo.

Next stop is Vilanova de Arousa, where we can visit some manor houses including Valle-Inclán’s family House, now a museum dedicated to the outstanding Galician writer Ramón del Valle-Inclán.

A bridge connects Vilanova de Arousa with the Arousa Island. From an ecological point of view, the island is really important due to Carreirón Natural Park.

Next important city is Vilagarcía de Arousa, where we can visit the churches of San Martiño de Sobran (13th century) and Santiago de Carril (16th – 17th century), as well as and Vista Alegre Convent manor House (18th century).

OPPOSITE SIDE OF AROUSA

On the opposite side of the Ría de Arousa there’s different celtic settlements (castros) between Boiro and Rianxo. Castelao, one of the most important writers from Galicia, was born in Rianxo, where we can visit the church of Santa Comba (16th century), the church of Santa María de Leiro (17th century) and the Our Lady of Guadalupe Sanctuary.

Across Bamio and its petroglyphs from the Bronze Age, we arrive in Catoira, a small village that was invaded by Vikings during the Middle Ages and, then, by Almoravid pirates. From that time, we have the Towers from the West, the chapel of the castle and the Cross of King Alfonso III.
